If you’re like me, you’re a bit suspicious about the chemicals that are present in our everyday household products, even something as innocuous as an air freshener.  There’s more than one way to make air freshener. Have a look below and see if any of these appeal to you.

Make Your Own Air Freshener with Essential Oils

Essential oils not only smell nice, they can also make a healthy addition to your household.

Please note: we recommend a glass spray bottle because some essential oils can break down plastic.

Homemade Air FreshenerEssential oils with antiviral properties

  • Cinnamon
  • Eucalyptus
  • Lavender
  • Lemon
  • Oregano
  • Thyme

Essential oils with antibacterial properties

  • Eucalyptus
  • Lavender
  • Lemon
  • Lime
  • Marjoram
  • Oregano
  • Peppermint
  • Rosemary
  • Sage
  • Sandalwood
  • Wild Orange

Supplies needed

  • 5 tablespoons baking soda
  • Essential oil of your choice
  • 3 cups water
  • Funnel
  • Bowl
  • Glass spray bottle with a light misting sprayer


  • Place the baking soda in the bowl
  • Add 30-40 drops of essential oil
  • Mix it in
  • Use the funnel to put the mixture into the spray bottle
  • Add the water to the bottle
  • Replace the lid and give the bottle a good shake


  • You could add some decorative paper to the bottle so it can sit in your living room, bathroom or kitchen and look pretty.
  • To save time making new air freshener, put the recipe on the back of the bottle with your labelmaker.

Make Your Own Air Freshener with Orange Peel

Here’s a great way to use your citrus peel scraps!

Supplies Needed

  • Orange peel, or lemon, lime or any citrus peel
  • Water
  • Strainer
  • Jug
  • Bottle


  • Boil the peels in the water
  • Strain the liquid into a jug
  • Pour the cooled liquid into the bottle

Make Your Own Air Freshener with Fabric Softener

Supplies Needed

  • Fabric Softener
  • Saucepan, not your best pan
  • 1 cup Water
  • Spoon


  • Combine a few squirts of the fabric softener and water in the pan
  • Heat on the stove on a very low heat setting, stirring occasionally
  • Bring to the boil and remove from heat
  • Pour the cooled liquid into a spray bottle.

Make Your Own Air Freshener with Downy Unstopable beads

Here is another method using a product that might be in your laundry cupboard.

Please note: this freshener is not suitable for spraying on leather, velvet or any other heavy materials. On your carpet is fine.

Supplies Needed

  • Downy Unstopables
  • 3 cups Water
  • Microwave-proof jug
  • Funnel
  • Spray bottle


  • Heat the water for 1 minute in the microwave
  • Measure out almost a lid of Downy Unstopables beads
  • Use the funnel to pour the beads into the bottle
  • Pour the water into he bottle until about two-thirds full
  • Replace the lid and give the bottle a good shake
