Homemade Gourmet CoffeeDo you buy a coffee on the way to work every morning?  A $5 coffee bought every morning is costing you $1,250 each year!  Are there better places to be spending that money?

How do you make the best homemade coffee?

With a bit of investment and some preparation, you can make your own irresistible coffee for a fraction of the cost of store-bought coffee.

You’ll need to purchase a good travel mug.  I have purchased two so I have one ready to go while one is ready to be washed.

You have two choices: you can make the espresso coffee each morning, or you can put together a mixture that can be spooned into your cup each morning.

Espresso coffee

You’ll need to purchase a stovetop expresso coffeemaker for around $20-$30.  Make sure you read the product instructions to get the best results.

It’s a good idea to try this out for the first time on a Sunday morning or when you are not in a rush.  Then you’ll be ready to produce gourmet coffee like clockwork on your working days.

To make an espresso:

  • Heat milk on the stove or in the microwave; pour into the travel mug.
  • Add 1oz of espresso to 6oz of milk.
  • Make the expresso following the product instructions.

To make your espresso more interesting:

  • Mocha Latte – Add chocolate syrup and sugar to taste.
  • Vanilla Latte – Add a couple of drops of vanilla extract and sugar to taste.
  • Caramel Latte – Add caramel syrup and sugar to taste.
  • Peppermint Latte – Add a couple of drops of peppermint extract and sugar to taste.

Coffee mix

Here are some recipes that use instant coffee.  I like these ones, because I can mix them together on a Sunday and put the mix in a jar, ready for use on working mornings.  The first time you do this, experiment with how much you add to each cup.  Start with a couple of dessertspoons.

Toffee Coffee

  • 1 cup instant non-fat dry milk powder
  • 1/2 cup powdered coffee creamer
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • Pinch salt
  • 1/4 cup store-bought butterscotch-flavored instant pudding mix

Café Vienna

  • 1/2 cup instant coffee
  • 2/3 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup instant nonfat dry milk powder
  • 1/4 cup powdered coffee creamer
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon

Which kind do you want to try?  Whichever one you like, I’ll bet you can recreate your favorite coffee for a lot less money than store-bought coffees.
